Podcast Episode 92 — The Real Reason You Keep Saying 'I Can't Afford It' (When You Know You Need It)
Eighty-six women applied for a full scholarship to Self Made Hub this year. We gave out 10 spots, a thousand dollars already taken off the investment for each one. Some of them still said no.
Not because the money wasn't there. Because the belief wasn't there yet. I've watched this pattern for years now, and it costs brilliant women more time and more money than almost anything else I see in this business.
Episode 92 is about what "I can't afford it" is actually saying underneath, and the five moves you can make once you stop letting fear make your financial decisions for you.
The difference between a real cash constraint and fear in disguise
In almost every case, "I can't afford it" is not a financial statement. It's a fear statement dressed in financial language. It sounds responsible. Measured. Like the grown-up choice.
But underneath it, it's usually saying something closer to "what if I invest and it doesn't work for me." That's not a cash flow problem. That's a belief problem, and the two get tangled together so often that most people never separate them.
Research from the Journal of Consumer Psychology backs this up with numbers. Loss aversion, our tendency to fear losses more than we value equivalent gains, makes an investment feel up to twice its actual cost. A $3,000 program registers emotionally like $6,000. Meanwhile the cost of staying stuck never arrives as an invoice, so it registers as zero. It isn't zero. You just don't get the bill until later.
What $100,000 in twelve months actually built
I've invested over $100,000 in my own business growth this last year, and I was scared every single time I said yes.
The Paid Ads Mastermind
This is the investment that changed how we scale our reach. Before it, I was guessing at what worked in our paid advertising. After it, I had a real framework for reading the data and acting on it.
The VIP Business Strategy Day
A full day with a mentor, just me, her, and my business. What came out of that day was a revenue model I couldn't see from inside my own business. Sometimes you're too close to it, and you need someone who's built what you're trying to build to show you what you're missing.
The AI Training Program
This built the infrastructure I talk about on the show, the dashboards, the automations, the operations system that runs without me. I could have kept watching YouTube tutorials. I chose to get in the room with people who'd already built it.
None of that happens if I let fear make the financial decision for me. Every business breakthrough I've had has lived on the other side of an investment that scared me first.
What the number actually looks like once you see it
The hardest part of "I can't afford it" is that the cost of not investing stays invisible. It never shows up as a line item. It just quietly accumulates while you keep running things the way you always have.
We built a free tool for this called the Leak Calculator. It takes your offer price and your monthly lead volume, checks three systems (automated lead capture, automated follow-up, and automated call booking), and shows you exactly how much revenue is leaking through whatever's missing, every single month.
A Harvard Business Review study found that businesses who respond to a lead within one hour are nearly 7x more likely to have a meaningful sales conversation than those who wait even two hours. Most small business owners are following up in days, if at all, simply because it's manual and they're busy. That's not a marketing problem. That's a systems problem, and it's one you can see the price of in about thirty seconds.
Where to start
If you run the calculator and it shows you a leak, and it will, the 5-Day Tech Chaos Cleanup Challenge is exactly where you start fixing it. Five days, live, with our team. We go through your tech, find where your leads are falling through the cracks, and start building the systems that catch them.
